Excitement took over at Peabodys Coffee last week as a group of our finest Baristas assembled to take part in the Peabodys 2017 Barista of the year competition.
The competition included several key stages in which each competitor was judged on how well they performed. These included:
- Fifteen minutes to accurately set up a coffee grinder to produce a 14-15g double shot of coffee which would then flow through the machine in 20 to 30 seconds;
- Fifteen minutes to create five drinks for the judges including Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, Flat White and an Americano. During this section they were marked on the quality of each drink, how long they took to make it and the milk texture;
- Finally, each competitor was marked on their customer service qualities, working practices and overall speed;
The judge certainly had a tough time on his hands making a decision with each competitor scoring high marks and complimentary comments on the excellent standards of the Peabodys staff and their fantastic level of professional skill were made.
The level of high quality work made for a very difficult decision but an overall excellent championship.
In the end, our winner was Jawad Boukantar who thrilled the judge by excelling in each section of the competition. A special mention also goes to all the other competitors who did a brilliant job too.

As the competition came to a close and the group got together for photographs, thoughts turned to next time.
